Pensacola's climate and the hurricane season

Pensacola is one of the wettest cities in the continental United States, averaging roughly 65 inches of rain a year. Summer brings near-daily thunderstorms, and tropical systems can deliver a season's worth of rain in a weekend: Hurricane Sally in 2020 and the non-tropical April 2014 flood each dropped well over 20 inches on parts of the city.

What to watch on this page when a storm is coming

  • Gust forecast crossing 39 mph (orange bars): tropical-storm-force conditions. Outdoor preparations and bridge travel become dangerous. Finish preparations before the first orange bar.
  • 72-hour rainfall above 5–6 inches: street flooding becomes likely in low areas such as Bayou Chico, Bayou Texar, Carpenter Creek, Eleven Mile Creek and parts of Warrington and Brownsville.
  • Falling barometric pressure: a steady drop at KPNS, combined with rising wind from the east or northeast, means the storm is approaching.
  • Radar rain bands: outer bands can spin up brief tornadoes, especially on the east side of a landfalling storm. Have a tornado shelter spot (interior room, lowest floor) even if you are not evacuating.

Where this data comes from

Observations are from the automated weather station at Pensacola International Airport (KPNS). The forecast, wind, gust and rainfall values are the official NWS Mobile/Pensacola gridded forecast for downtown Pensacola, pulled live from api.weather.gov. Radar is from the KMOB WSR-88D. Nothing here is modified or re-forecast by Pensacola Hurricane.
