Hurricanes that hit Navarre
- Hurricane Erin (1995) made landfall near Navarre Beach in August 1995.
- Hurricane Opal (1995) two months later destroyed dunes and buildings on Navarre Beach with a massive surge.
- Hurricane Ivan (2004) and Hurricane Dennis (2005), which made landfall on Santa Rosa Island between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach, damaged homes on both sides of the sound.
See the full Pensacola hurricane history for details on each storm.
Evacuation in Navarre
- Navarre Beach has one road off the island — the Navarre Beach Causeway — which closes in high winds.
- From Navarre, SR-87 is the main route north to I-10 and Milton.
- US-98 floods in low spots during surge events; leave before the water rises.
Local preparation tip
Navarre has grown quickly since Ivan. Many newer homes are built to modern codes, but flood risk along the sound and bayous is unchanged — check your FEMA zone and elevation certificate.
